Scaffolding the Playhouse on Rodney Square, Wilmington, DE

When you are in downtown Wilmington there are two things you really need to see.  One is the newly remodeled DuPont Theater – now called the Playhouse on Rodney Square.  The Playhouse was opened in 1913 as one of the select theaters on the Broadway touring circuit. After 100 years, it is the oldest theater continually on that circuit. In addition to a full schedule of Broadway productions.

And then secondly, you need to meet the honorary Mayor of Wilmington, Tony P.  Because without him and his company, Pinnacle Scaffold, you might not have the illustrious remodel at the playhouse.  You see, when something needs to get done in Wilmington you call Tony P.

Under a super tight deadline to complete the theater renovation, Sundew Painting (one of the top painting companies in the area) called Pinnacle to bring the heat.  And boy did they ever.  In record time, Tony P and his crew got the scaffold in through the back alleys and galleys and erected a massive scaffold with dancefloor so restoration crews could get access to everything; the walls, ceiling, curtains, nooks and crannies, doors, entryways, you name it.

Pinnacle crews managed the tight load in and out from the back alley.  They handled the pitched/tilted floor.  They navigated the multiple elevations and curved design of the scaffold to get to every surface inside the theater.

But most importantly, they handled the tight deadline to get this 1252 seat theater renovation done and get the plays rolling again.

The result is a stunning new looking place to experience live theater.  This venue is steeped in history.  And now it’s going to carry on into the future with one of kind events that will be sure to create lasting memories for all attendees.

Rockford Falls, Scaffold Work Deck Over Water

Question: How do you get crews under a bridge over water to do mechanical work when scaffolding isn’t an option? 

The good people at LC Construction were struggling to come up with a solution to this almost impossible question. The ground under the bridge was unstable with the ever changing stream floor and worse yet, If the water were to rise the scaffold could be washed away. 

But they knew the honorary mayor of Wilmington, Mr. Tony P, when they had worked together on the project just to the left of the bridge called The Falls.  So they called Pinnacle Scaffold again for a quick solution.  And they didn’t disappoint.  

Tony P took one look at the job and remembered the special pigeon hole stands that are designed to suspend powered scaffolding or safety lines through existing or core drilled holes in a concrete or steel structure.  That would allow him to drop a suspended scaffold line down through the concrete to hang a system scaffold work deck or platform with the weight supported from the top and crews could safely work beneath above the water.

Problem solved.  It’s not a huge job but it was another successful solution for Tony P and Pinnacle Scaffold team.  The job went off without a hitch and we are proud to work with LC Construction once again.

Power shut off for Pinnacle Scaffold, Wilmington, DE

Scaffolding Delaware Landmarks

Pinnacle continues its march through the historic district and landmarks in Delaware. (see our post on the Josephine Fountain) We are proud to help our hometown renovate and refurbish these incredible statues and edifices. We pride ourselves in being the very best at getting crews access to historic structures without leaving a trace – and this statue is no different.

Located in the heart of downtown Wilmington, DE (Rodney Square) stands a statue to Caesar Rodney, an American lawyer, politician, signer of the Declaration of Independence and President of Delaware during most of the American Revolution.  The monument commemorates Rodney’s ride from Dover to Philadelphia on July 1-2, 1776 to cast a tie-breaking vote for the Delaware delegation, and thus ensuring Delaware’s support of the Declaration of Independence.

And around that statue is scaffolding erected by Pinnacle Scaffold, also from Delaware, to help crews get access to the entire statue for renovations. The statue was created by James E. Kelly and stands in the front of the square.

Our crew took the utmost care to design, deliver, erect scaffolding that would allow renovation crews the ability to refurbish the base, (repointing, cleaning), shining and polishing the statue and bringing the monument back to its former glory.

We also added debris netting for containment while the guys did their work.

More on Rodney square: Rodney Square presently includes green space with landscaped borders, paved, perimeter walkways, cast stone walls, stairs and balustrades, and 12 bronze lanterns. Two concrete fountains flanking the west steps serve as a memorial to William Poole (1853-1918), a descendant of an early Quaker family and former head of the Wilmington Fountain Society.

Pinnacle Scaffold is on the front page of the Delaware Daily News Journal!

It’s always a welcome treat when you get a news story in a publication but it’s especially tasty when you land on the front page of the newspaper!

Granted, this isn’t a story about how Pinnacle Scaffold is setting the world on fire with it’s scaffolding projects but none-the-less it’s a great story about revitalizing the downtown Wilmington area and it features one of our jobs.

Peepin’ – Hidin’ – Scaffolding Anyway You Want it.

There are certain jobs that scream – LOOK AT ME and there are ones that kind of creep up on you – like this job at 113 E. Main St., Newark, DE.
It’s right on the busy section of town where the college students roam. From the front you can see a gorgeous custom-built overhead protection system that was put into place to keep the pedestrians safe along the sidewalk and the businesses open during façade restoration.  But from the side you see… (Scroll to bottom for video of the job)
 
Let’s start with the canopy first.  Pinnacle is a master of crafting functional yet attractive overhead protection systems for their clients. Safety for pedestrians is our main concern while the construction, renovation or masonry work goes on overhead.

And this system canopy was no different. It allowed the Stone Balloon Ale House and all of the other businesses out front to remain open while façade work goes on around the building.

This custom sized canopy protects the patrons on the patio, the tenants as they go about their daily routine and the pedestrians who pass by. And best of all it looks great like it could have been designed into the original architecture. Okay – maybe not that good.

And then you have the “creep” factor on the rest of this job. It just kind of creeps up on you but behind the front of the building lays a very large scaffolding job.

Hidden back there is a 60’ tall X 200’ long (800 lineal foot) scaffold that will allow restoration and masonry crews complete access to each floor and every inch of the façade.

This 6 story system scaffold sits on the ground next to the walkway that spans between the two buildings. It’s a very busy complex and area with the University of Delaware students traveling to and fro.

We also have a Beta Track material hoist that helps get equipment to the crew safely and efficiently.
 
The entire scaffold will be wrapped in debris netting to further protect the pedestrians and tenants. Trash chutes will be added to help move debris from each floor to the ground level receptacles.
These photos and video were shot as the scaffold was being erected so there is more to come. I’ll try to update it with additional pics.

The job is being done in phases so as one section finishes crews will move the scaffolding around to the next section. And that’s a lot of scaffolding.

So the next time you’re a bopping around town and you see a cool overhead protection system out front of an establishment you might want to peek around the side to see if there is anything else going on. It might just surprise you.

Smart access and debris solution for Walgreens, Wilmington, DE

This Walgreens at 839 N. Market Street in Wilmington, DE is undergoing some renovations and re-roofing so they called Pinnacle Scaffold to design a scaffolding stair tower for access and then create a custom scaffold enclosure for the trash chute and dumpster beneath so crews could use it from several levels. We also wrapped the entire thing in debris netting to keep the detritus contained.

It’s not a huge job but another smart access and debris solution for a happy client.

Saving the Spires at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Wilmington DE

Constructed in 1927, St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Wilmington, DE, has withstood almost everything mother nature could throw at her.

But the recent earthquake on the east coast damaged some of the masonry and 4 spires at the top of the clock tower. You can see in the pictures that several of the limestone spires actually broke off.

The back chimney was also almost ready to collapse. 9 pieces of marble actually fell to the ground during the earthquake. Luckily, no one was injured. Also, as a result of the quake, there needed to be a lot of repointing done to the upper section (The stone is called Baxter Station marble and is very hard to find.)

Pinnacle Scaffold was called in because of our experience with historic buildings. The mission was to erect a scaffold that would allow workers to reach the delicate parts of the towers while keeping the church open for business as usual and not damaging any part of the landmark building.

One of the coolest things to see is the awesome stair tower and lift assembly that was erected to get crews and equipment to the top.

     

A sidewalk shed was erected to allow parishioners to enter and exit through the front doors while the tower is being repaired.

I just love it when a job comes together and everything works out great.  The church was happy to be open and we were grateful to be able to work on such an awesome structure.

Scaffolding a burned out mansion. Where there’s smoke there’s fire and scaffold.

The famous “Bloomfield” mansion was almost “Gone with Wind” like Tara, or Xanadu in “Citizen Cane”.  But firefighters were able to coral the blaze and keep the structure so it could be brought back to life like Lazarus.

And that’s where Pinnacle Scaffold comes in to save the day.  Pinnacle has a reputation for extraordinary work on historic properties and this was no exception.

Scaffolding around a burned out shell of a house is no easy feat but our experts handled it with great skill – giving crews the necessary access and room to do their work.

This Gilded Age Main Line mansion, known as “Bloomfield” was built in 1885 and later redesigned by architect Horace Trumbauer.  It boasts a grand ballroom, 14 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms and three power rooms.  It has 24.000 square feet and sits on a 7 acre estate.  Check out the slideshow of the BEFORE pics.  It was movie set spectacular.  In fact, it’s been in several movies over it’s lifetime.

The home is part of what once was the George H. McFadden estate, which used to encompass most of the block.  And it sits just down the road from the Villanova campus.

 

The blaze, with apparently started on the third floor quickly spread and caused significant damage to the entire building.

Current owners, Dean Topolinski and Julie Charbonneau plan to restore the home after the fast moving fire ripped through the structure April 4, 2012.

 

Restoring it to its former glory won’t be easy and is sure to cost millions of dollars.  Just look at the interior before the fire.

The house has been somewhat of a firestarter (had to say it) for gossip around the area.  Accusations of arson and greed have been thrown around by both the past owner and the new buyers.  I’ll leave that to you readers to decide.  Either way, this is the second time on a year that Pinnacle Scaffold has been onsite scaffolding the old girl.

   

As you can see from the photos, the real challenge was engineering a safe way to span the gaps and elevations all around this house.  A big shout out to Alternate Design Solutions for working with us to come up with certified drawings for solving that problem.

 

You can also see in the photos that here are numerous verticals and horizontals throughout.  That is because the entire structure is going to be tented with debris netting.  These extra supports are needed to keep it strong enough to withstand the elements.  Crews plan to work straight through the winter on this project and it’s a wonderful way to keep the heat in and elements out when working in nasty conditions.

So, with the utmost care Pinnacle Scaffold came in and scaffolded the entire mansion giving crews access to both the front and back sides.

Trumbauer, a famous Philadelphia architect, designed an expansion and renovation to Bloomfield at the behest of George H. McFadden Jr., a cotton-magnate who bought the estate in 1911. The first home there had been built by naturalist A. E. Gallatin in 1883, according to “American Splendor: The Residential Architecture of Horace Trumbauer” by Michael Kathrens.

Trumbauer had transformed the original building, creating an entry hall lined with caen-stone, a creamy, yellow limestone from France, marble floors and a grand staircase with wrought-iron railings in the style of Versailles. Outside, the Olmsted Brothers designed parks and formal gardens to frame the gracious chateau.

Although McFadden died in 1931 from an accidental electrocution from a steam cabinet in one of the home’s bathrooms, his family continued to own the manse until 1984, when the land was subdivided.
